How difficult is it to obtain permanent residency in New Zealand?

If you truly want to work and live in the Land of Kiwis on a permanent basis, applying for a New Zealand permanent resident visa is a wise decision. There is a distinction between a residence and a permanent residence; however you must live in New Zealand on a residency visa to become a permanent resident. Resident visas include a travel restriction that permits you to return to New Zealand until a specific date; however a New Zealand permanent residency visa allows you to return to New Zealand indefinitely (You need to make sure that your passport is valid).

To be eligible for a permanent resident visa in New Zealand, you must have lived in the country for two years on a residency visa and have met one of the five conditions, which include:

1. You must have spent a significant amount of time in New Zealand.

2. You are a tax resident of New Zealand. 3. You have committed your time and money in New Zealand.

4. You own a company in New Zealand.

5. You've established a base of operations in New Zealand.

If you are unable to achieve any of the five requirements, you may not be eligible to apply for permanent residency; nevertheless, you may be able to extend the travel restrictions on your resident visa.

In most situations, you will not be qualified to apply for a permanent residence visa in New Zealand without first applying for a resident visa through one of the various pathways available, such as the skilled migrant visa category and others. In some circumstances, you may be able to apply for a New Zealand PR visa immediately. These are some of them:

• Refugees and individuals in need of protection

• Applicants who have been in a 5-year relationship with a New Zealander and are applying from abroad

So, if you fall into one of the two categories listed above, you can apply for a NZ PR Visa right away. If you don't fit into any of the following categories, you'll need to apply for a resident visa first, then a New Zealand PR Visa.
