How to Make A US visa Appointment from India?

How to Make A US visa Appointment.

A US visa from India could be quite stressful to apply for, but with the right information and process in place, it is manageable and straightforward. Whether you are going to the US for tourism, business, or studies, getting a US visa has a few processes in place one of the most important of which is taking a visa appointment. In this blog, we guide you on how to obtain a US visa appointment from India and cover other topics you may need to prepare for the process of applying for a US visa.

Step 1: Identify Your Visa Type

To get a US visa, you have to identify what type of visa will be correct for your visit. Categories include different types of visas that the United States offers based on the nature of travel. These could be:

• B-1/B-2 Visitor Visa: This visa is given to those who have tourism in mind, go to see a friend or relative, or have to go for short-term business.

• F-1 Visa: These are for students planning to attend full-time education in the United States.

• H-1B Visa: for entry to the US for temporary employment in the speciality occupation.

• J-1 Visa: For participation in exchange visitor programs that encourage cultural exchange.

Step 2: Complete DS-160

Once you have determined which type of visa you will apply for, you are required to complete the DS-160 online. It is the most integral part of your visa application containing details regarding your personal life, travel plans, and background information.

  • To complete the DS-160 form, visit the Consular Electronic Application Center.
  • Ensure all fields are accurate, as differences between your form and your first appearance at the interview will delay or deny your visa.
  • Passport photograph of 2 x 2 inches on an entirely white background without any glasses and neutral facial expression.

After completing the DS-160 form, print out your confirmation page. It comes in handy during your visa appointment.

Step 3: Pay the Visa Application Fee

To proceed after submitting the DS-160 form, you need to pay the visa application fee, though the cost varies with the visa type, as shown:

  • B-1/B-2 Visitor Visa
  • F-1 Student Visa
  • H-1B Visa

The payment should be done in Indian Rupees (INR). The fee can be paid by National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) or mobile payment options. Alternatively, the fee can be paid in cash at any of the following banks: Axis Bank or Citibank.

Once the payment is done, save the receipt as your receipt number will be used to book an appointment for the visa.

Step 4: Create a Profile on the CGI Federal Website

Now that you have filled out the DS-160, and paid the visa application fee, you need to create a profile at the CGI Federal website to schedule US visa appointments in India.

1. Go to US Visa Information and Appointment Services for India

2. Click Apply for a Visa, and you will be asked to make an account.

3. Fill in all the information, including your passport number, receipt number of payment for visa fees, and DS-160 barcode number.

Once you have created your profile, you will be allowed to book a date for your visa appointment.

Step 5: Booking Your Visa Appointments

After you have registered your profile, you will be able to book two types of visa appointments:

1. VAC Appointment: To be taken for biometrics purposes, where your fingerprints and photograph will be taken.

2. US Embassy/Consulate Interview: This is where you will be interviewed to receive your visa.

To schedule these interviews:

  • Log into your CGI Federal account.
  • Select the VAC and consulate at which you would like to attend your interview.
  • Also, schedule the date for the Biometrics and Visa Interview. The dates for scheduling appointments will be within the available dates of US Consulates (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, or Kolkata) only.

Before an interview at your consulate, you are to book an appointment at VAC. You would then prefer a date where there is enough gap between the two appointments, thus eliminating any likelihood of conflicts during the interviews.

Step 6: Visit Your Visa Application Center (VAC) Interview

Your first interview is at the Visa Application Center (VAC), where your biometrics prints and photo will be taken.

On the date of your VAC interview, you should bring along:

  • Passport Copy
  • Copy of DS-160 confirmation page
  • Appointment confirmation letter printed from the CGI website

This meeting is usually very brief and straightforward, and once it's over, you'll be ready for your visa interview at the US Consulate.

Step 7: Attend Your Visa Interview at the US Consulate

Then, you have to attend an interview at the US Embassy or Consulate. It is a peak in obtaining a US visa. Here, the consular officer will interrogate you to ascertain whether you qualify for a US visa or not. Some of the usual questions may include:

  • What is your reason for going to the US?
  • How long will you be staying in the US?
  • Relatives or friends in the U.S.?
  • Demonstrate sufficient funds for maintenance during your stay during your visit.

For this interview, bring the following documents,

  • Passport with a validity of six months beyond your stay
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Appointment confirmation letter
  • Proof of receipt of the payment for the visa fee.
  • Proof supporting documents: may include financial documents, travel itinerary, proof of linkages to India (letter from employer, property deed, etc.) or admission letters to academic programs (in cases for student visas).

The application will be approved or rejected by the consular officer after an interview with you. Once your application is approved, your passport attached with the visa, will reach back to you via a courier service or picked up at a location designated by you.
